Army List: Astra Militarum Full Mech


Here is my first candidate army list, a fully mechanised list of Veterans in Chimeras with fire support. This would use all my vehicles except the the Leman Russes, and 'only' 55 infantry. It is reminiscent of a 5th Ed Imperial Guard list, and would be a good basis for a 7th Ed  Astra Militarum list; but it really needs a reliable countermeasure to Invisible deathstars to be truly competitive.

This list would do well in multi-Objective missions, especially Maelstrom missions, with its ten Objective Secured units and seven other Scoring units. The Manticores, Chimeras and lasguns contribute good anti-personnel firepower, and the Manticores, Vendettas and melta/plasma contribute good anti-armour and anti-monster. This list relies on the Vendettas for anti-air and could be overwhelmed by an air force list.

A single Knight or Lord of War is easily manageable by this list, and armies with four or five Knights can be beaten on Objectives, since the big guys are very inefficient at popping transports. However, I think this list would struggle against an Adamantium Lance with a good supporting element.

An Invisible deathstar could trouble this list, as it will likely fold to any assault unit that gets amongst it. An easy fix could be to substitute one Devil Dog for a Culexus Assassin; this guy can project a huge mobile null zone whilst embarked on a Vendetta. This reduces the mobile melta in the list—and fast Chimera hulls offer great utility as blockers—but I would happily make this swap if I was expecting to play against heavily psychic armies.

This list doesn't make the best use of Orders, and has no psychic buffs, relying instead on weight of numbers and dice to overwhelm the enemy. I think I could make a better list by incorporating a Platoon, but this candidate list could be a good starting point.
