Here is the next candidate army list for my Astra Militarum. This list has fewer Veteran Squads in Chimeras than the fully mechanised list, but includes a Platoon and a Knight.

This list has fewer Objective Secured units and lower mobility, but the Platoon Command Squad and Special Weapon Squad embarked in Vendettas mitigate this to a degree—noting you have to risk either Hovering or disembarking to Score with those guys.

I like the idea of having a big squad of Guardsmen holding my backfield (and hopefully an Objective), and contributing Order- and Divination-buffed Autocannon fire. The Inquisitor joins the Platoon to give them Stubborn Ld 10—I don't want a Priest making them Fearless because that prevents them from Going To Ground then taking the Get Back Into the Fight Order. I might make the Inquisitor the Warlord since a 2+ Look Out Sir and thirty ablative bodies is better than the 4+ LOS and four ablative bodies that a Company Commander brings along. The Preferred Enemy Xenos trait and Orbital Bombardment trait are pretty nice too.

Of course, the big difference in this list is that it includes a Knight Paladin. Mobility, resilience, firepower and melee power all in a single, awesome-looking model is a great deal!

I've run the numbers on these first two candidate lists and this one comes in at about ten extra infantry models than the first, but the models needed for the smaller list are a subset of the larger list. That means that if I build enough infantry for the semi mechanised list then I can also build the fully mech list. For vehicles, the reverse applies: the fully mech list needs a few extra Chimeras than the semi mech list, plus the pair of Devil Dogs.

This means that if I build the following core then I can build either list:
  • Sixty infantry and three gun teams
  • Six Chimeras
  • Two Devil Dogs
  • Two Manticores
  • Two Vendettas
But I would also have to buy and build an Imperial Knight...
