Analysis: Codex Eldar Craftworlds [Revised]

Friday, 30 January 2015

I am very pleased to announced that Elite 40,000 has now received over 10,000 page views, only a little more than three months after my first post! I'd like to extend a big "thank you" to all of you who have visited this blog in that time, especially those who have contributed by subscribing, commenting and sharing posts with your fellow hobbyists.

Over the next few months I hope to see the Elite 40,000 audience grow into an even more interactive hobby community. So if you have any conversion ideas or pictures, army lists you would like reviewed, or tactical dilemmas you would like analysed, then please don't hesitate to email me at:

elite40k@hotmail.com

I continue to welcome all feedback on posts, even if you don't agree with what I'm writing—and we've already seen a few good debates!

My future plans for my hobby and this blog include my growing Astra Militarum army, a desert-world modular gaming table and terrain set, and eventually the addition of a Craftworld Saim Hann contingent to my Craftworld Ulthwe Eldar army. Meanwhile I will be running and playing in a 40k League with my local gaming group and playing in tournaments and Apocalypse games when those opportunities arise.

Now back to the painting table...

How do five Leman Russes with Preferred Enemy sound to you? "Nice, but too expensive" was my first reaction to the first Astra Militarum Formation in Sanctus Reach: The Red Waaagh. But an old gaming buddy of mine recently recommended the Steel Host Formation to me and then I really started thinking about it. After all, I already have a couple of Demolisher kits and a Hydra/Wyvern kit, and my infantry-building progress has been slow, so maybe blowing 900 pts on a handful of tanks isn't such a bad idea?

I made good progress on my Taurox conversion today. The main assembly process is complete and this guy is ready for some spray primer. The wheels, side and rear steps, and exhaust pipes have not been glued on yet since I will spray those black while the rest of the vehicle will be sprayed AP Skeleton Bone.

While the internet has been abuzz over the Angel's Fury Spearhead Formation that allows Blood Angels to—with a substantial investment of points—assault off the Deep Strike, I haven't noticed anyone talking about the other Blood Angels Formation that can Deep Strike without scattering and has Objective Secured on every single non-vehicle model.

"This kit requires some modelling skill to assemble." That's what it says on the Victoria Miniatures webstore for their 'APC Wheels and Suspension Kit' a.k.a. Taurox conversion kit. Sounds like a pretty standard disclaimer for a resin third-party kit, right? What they probably should have said was, "you may be tempted to rage-quit the hobby forever trying to assemble this thing".

So that was probably a bit melodramatic, but assembling the wheels and suspension was much harder than I expected—and this is just the first part of my quest to build a better Taurox.

It's been six weeks since my last Astra Militarum project update so I'm well overdue for another one! Unfortunately I have not achieved as much as I had hoped, mostly because I was invited to a tournament and so I spent my hobby time building and painting a Void Shield Generator and Jetbike Autarch to use with my Eldar army.

So with another tournament behind me I thought I would recap some lessons learned and consider some possible improvements to my Mechdar army list. Given that my current hobby focus is on my Astra Militarum army, I will be looking to make improvements that do not require any expansion of my current collection.

Round three, here we go! The final game of the day saw me matched against yet another Eldar army, this one a colourful mixed bag of units rather than an optimised onslaught of mechanised firepower. This mission was the most conventional one of the day, with VP for five Objectives (three Crusade and two Emperor's Will), kill-point differential and the three standard Secondaries.

You can see my list in my round one battle report.

Round two saw me mirror-matched against another Mechdar army in a progressive scoring table quarters mission. Check out my previous posts for the short version and full version of my army list. With nine Wave Serpents in play, this game was going to be brutal!

This weekend I attended a small invitational tournament with my Eldar. This was a 1750 pts tournament with minimal army list restrictions (no Unbound, points-limited Super Heavies) but some poorly designed custom missions that I believed warranted some list tailoring. The abridged version of my army list was:
Autarch with Jetbike and Mantle
Fire Dragons in Serpent
Dire Avengers in Serpent
Dire Avengers in Serpent
Dire Avengers in Serpent
Crimson Hunter
Crimson Hunter
Crimson Hunter
Night Spinner
Void Shield Generator
Pretty standard Mechdar for me, but with the addition of a Night Spinner that I thought might be useful in the tournament missions.

Russian, Alternative, Conversion

Third time lucky, I've finished the Jetbike and I'm not changing anything else on it! Time to move on to the Autarch rider.

I'm taking my Mechdar to a 1750 pts tournament this weekend and I'm still yet to finalise my list. Contrary to popular belief, there is actually a little more to building a good Mechdar army than "spam Wave Serpentz and profit". While multiple Serpents will obviously form the core of a competitive Mechdar list, the supporting elements and force multipliers you choose can make a big difference to the overall strength of the army. But even more important is how you tailor your generic list to the unique requirements and idiosyncrasies of a specific tournament format.

Russian, Conversion, Alternative, Quickshade

After my initial optimism and intermediate epic failure, I have finally achieved a level of success with my new Saim Hann colour scheme for my Eldar Autarch conversion. And all it took was a lot of mineral turpentine and a cordless power drill!

Progress is slow on my Eldar Jetbike Autarch conversion—and I have discovered a profound dislike of painting red. I know from past experience that red is a colour that really needs multiple thin coats to get even coverage, but trying to get a clean finish on a predominantly red model is extremely painful! I spent this morning stripping the paint off the Jetbike and will make a new attempt at painting it this afternoon.
