Project: Desert Astra Militarum #1

It's been a case of all-hobby, no-bloggy for the last few months. The new edition of 40k has reinvigorated my motivation to build and paint a decent-sized Astra Militarum army, that has been ticking along for quite a few years now. Here is the test model for my not-Tallarn desert infantry!

I built this guy from a mixture of Anvil Industry and Mad Robot parts. The aim was to represent Imperial soldiers that have gone a bit native during a desert world campaign, rather than desert world natives i.e. the original Tallarn minis.

I'm pretty happy with the result, and it wasn't too difficult or time-consuming to paint, which is a big positive when I have at least 29 more to do just to field a Battalion Detachment!

I've also recently finished building and painting a battery of Earthshaker Platforms. They deserve a proper showcase post when I have the time to dig out my light-box and photography setup.

These fantastic models are from Victoria Miniatures—although I got them by pledging on one of the Reaper Bones Kickstarters a looooong time ago. The stock kit comes with a wheeled carriage, but that looked a bit too WWI for my liking so I replaced them with the track upgrade kit also available from Victoria Miniatures.

This colour scheme, and the painting method, is what I plan to apply to all my vehicles. Right now, my vehicle painting queue looks like:

  • Three Russes
  • Two Hellhounds
  • One Wyvern

And I also still have to build:

  • One Hellhound
  • Two Wyverns
  • Three Manticores

Back to the hobby desk!
